Grass Labyrinth 2005

Created for a group show of the professional association of Visual Artists with the theme “Nature in Interior Spaces”, held in the Berchtoldvilla in Salzburg (curator Martin Lerch). The main point of the concept was to transplant one's own experience in nature into an interior setting by means of installation and objects.
Material: wooden frame, cover sheet, soil, natural lawn
Dimension: 3.2 m x 3.2 m (10.24 qm)

Title of piece: Life Signature
For me, it is in nature where I glimpse the fusion of spirit and matter. The Nature-Culture space I have created here represents my memory of the space of experiencing “being at one with all”. I wish to keep alive this “Genius Loci” in the rooms I inhabit.
The square (grass plot) is the symbol for the number four: four directions, four seasons, four elements, etc…. In cosmological terms the square represents planet Earth. Grass means growth and all matter that nourishes us. The 7-path classical labyrinth symbolizes spiritual knowing. It is a structure of order in the chaotic darkness of human existence.

The exhibit lasted for 32 days. The lawn had to be watered; the pattern in the grass square had to be re-cut. A variety of small flowers grew out of this carpet, showing that it is possible to shelter over a length of time a living green space (natural lawn) in one's home.
